about BEWell

BEWell (Building Engagement and Well-being through Electronic Life-like Learning) is an innovative digital course designed to support mental health and well-being among university students. it integrates evidence-based methods from positive psychology and health education with cutting-edge digital technologies, offering engaging, interactive, and personalized learning experiences that foster mental wellness. the course is grounded in a new theory of well-being (Seligman, 2011; Donaldson, 2019; Kočí, 2024) and develops knowledge and skills across ten key domains of a fulfilling life: positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, achievement, physical health, mindset, environment, financial security, and authenticity. these pillars form the foundation of the course’s individual learning modules.

what problems BEWell solves

current statistics reveal that 20% of university students are diagnosed with serious mental health conditions (WHO, 2023), and approximately 60% experience depression, anxiety, or other forms of psychological distress (Ochnik et al., 2021). by leveraging gamification, AI-driven active discussions with avatars and researchers, and interactive activities, BEWell empowers students not only to manage the inevitable stress of university life but also to enhance their well-being, improve academic performance, and rediscover the joy and excitement of learning (Gan et al., 2022; Ribeiro-Silva et al., 2022; Morgan & Simmons, 2021; Keskin et al., 2020; Lister et al., 2021; Valenzuela-García et al., 2022; Abelson et al., 2022). the ongoing collection of student well-being data, integrated into the course, allows us to respond quickly to their needs and continually adapt course content.
the project addresses pressing issues, including the increasing prevalence of mental health challenges, academic failure, and student attrition, all of which have significant economic impacts on education systems. BEWell creatively overcomes the limitations of traditional tertiary education through innovation, flexibility, accessibility, and its ability to meet the needs of modern students.

our diverse team comprises academics, educators, researchers, and practical education specialists, united by a shared passion for working with students and a commitment to innovation in digital learning. the team is led by Dr. Jana Kočí, Ph.D., an expert in academic well-being in the Czech Republic who is internationally recognized for her work. with 18 years of experience in academia, she brings unique expertise and practical insights to the project.

global aspects of BEWell

advanced technologies make the learning process more targeted, efficient, and adaptable to student needs, market changes, and new regulations compared to static, traditional educational approaches. our target users include universities and students worldwide, primarily in Europe, the USA, and Asia. the project builds on global partnerships with Charles University, 4EU+ alliance universities, and institutions in the USA and Asia, ensuring culturally sensitive and scalable solutions. to date, there is no comparable product on the market while an emerging trend shows that students increasingly prioritize institutions that provide quality campus life and well-being support over institutional prestige.

university students represent a highly specific target group, systematically underserved by many institutions and almost entirely overlooked by the private sector, which has yet to fully explore the potential of modern educational methods. universities often struggle to address student well-being effectively, presenting us with a unique opportunity to become a key partner for universities globally and a dominant force in supporting university students’ mental health and satisfaction. our global expansion is underpinned by the platform’s scalability and adaptability to various cultures and languages.

Let us introduce you to our full-semester long online interactive course that is full of interesting well-being research findings, joyful activities and life interaction between students and well-being professionals that will change your way of thinking about education. We are Uniwellsity and Skilldriver and we love delivering important topics to students while using the advantage of the newest technologies using Artificial Inteligence. This helps us to individualize the course for the absolvent the most effective way. Students will be accompanied by AI avatar of Jana Koci, PhD. unrecognizable from a real teacher, that will be there for them throughout the whole semester.

Who Will Be Leading This Journey?

Our program is guided by Dr. Jana Koci, a well-being researcher and educator at Charles University and the author of the book

Through her avatar—so lifelike it’s nearly indistinguishable from the real person—Dr. Koci will personally greet students, introduce topics, and offer support throughout the semester. Every three weeks, students will also participate in live discussions with Dr. Koci, creating a supportive, interactive experience.

 

By investing in your students’ well-being, you’re giving them the skills to enjoy their university years and the resilience to face future challenges.

Well-being education for all!

So, what do you say? Would you like to provide your students with this highly evidence-based and entertaining online well-being education? If yes, we believe that you are making a good decision that will change your students lives. Your students will be provided with 12 weeks of education while we will be taking care of everything. Thus the course organization, all communication and interactions with students, teaching, as well as providing your students with regular optional in-between lessons activities on our platform. We will also give them the access to the online interactive well-being book and their own fun well-being workbook. And to make sure you can see the progress in students well-being, we will also provide you with report of students activity at the end of the semester. All you have to do is to send us a list of attendees and their emails. We will be even happy to record the class credits for your students into your university system at the end of the semester if needed :-)

But how many students can we include into this well-being class, you might ask? As many as you wish. Yes. That is why we are here too. We have unlimited capacity compared to the traditional courses so none of your students who is interested in well-being education won't be left behind.

Anotace​

Chcete pracovat na vlastním well-beingu, studovat ve větší pohodě – a dost možná i úspěšněji? Pak by pro vás tento kurz mohl být tou správnou volbou. Univerzity v poslední době zaznamenávají zvýšený zájem o studium tohoto fenoménu a samy chtějí well-being svých studentů aktivně podporovat. Tento celosemestrální on-line kurz je navržený tak, aby účastníkům poskytl hlubší porozumění nejnovějších přístupů a teorií. Výsledkem je osvojení návyků budujících vlastní pohodu, která pozitivně ovlivní nejen vás, ale i vaše studijní výsledky. Na každém z plánovaných webinářů se stručně podíváme na nejnovější vědecké poznatky z oblasti well-beingu, představíme si výzkumem ověřené aktivity budující pohodu a vyzkoušíme si, jak takové aktivity aplikovat do každodenního života studenta. Začneme společným zhodnocením dat získaných v oboru pozitivní psychologie v posledních dvou desetiletích. Pozornost zaměříme na relativně nový rámec podpory well-beingu, PERMA5, který představuje základní stavební kameny štěstí, na jež se zaměříme v průběhu následujícího semestru. Probereme například fyzické zdraví, pozitivní myšlení, vytváření pozitivního prostředí, ekonomické bezpečí, pozitivní emoce, angažovanost, dobré vztahy, smysl života, úspěch a naší autenticitu. Společně se webinář po webináři prostřednictvím přednášek, skupinových diskusí a procvičovacích aktivit naučíme pečovat o svůj well-being, díky němuž si kousek po kousku poskládáme spokojený studentský život.

Ukončení předmětu​

Předmět je zakončen zápočtem. Studující má na splnění podmínek zápočtu celkem tři pokusy, z toho dva opravné.

Udělení zápočtu je podmíněno 70% účastí na on-line výuce, aktivním zapojováním ve výuce, plnění cvičení mezi jednotlivými setkáními, vyplnění dotazníku well-beingu před zahájením výuky a po ukončení výuky (nepovinné, velmi ale oceňované).​​

Studijní náročnost

Předmět má 5 kreditů dle ECTS, celková časová zátěž studenta odpovídá 125 hodinám. Doba očekávané přípravy na 1 přednášku 90 minut, samostudium literatury (za celý semestr) 13 hodin, práce se studijními materiály (za celý semestr) 13 hodin, plnění průběžných úkolů (za celý semestr) 17 hodin. Příprava na zkoušku 20 hodin.

Organizace

Setkání jsou 90 minut každý týden prostřednictvím ZOOM (přičemž prostřední a závěrečné setkání budou osobně v prostorech kampusu Hybrenská). Po úspěšném zapsání do předmětu vám bude zaslán Zoom link, na který se prosím přihlaště v narozvrhované době.

Prezenace jsou prosím vzhledem k aktuálnosti tématu a odborné literatuře psané v angličtině, výuka je ovšem, stejně jako veškeré povídání a komunikace mezi námi vedená v češtině.

Ke kurzu je vytvořen Moodle "Well-being Studentů", ve kterém vám budou k dispozici všechny studijní materiály. Kurz můžete dohledat zde: https://dl1.cuni.cz/course/view.php?id=14020 (klíč do kurzu vám bude předán po vašem úspěšném zápise). Kapacita studentů je pro interaktivní formu výuky omezena na 30.​
